Wolfgang Stein is an underachiever and over thinker. This is where he keeps his writing so he can be motivated to keep writing. See his other work here.

Things I was impressed with when I was a kid

Starting the peel of a banana
Slicing a banana with a knife for cereal
Each pale coin perfectly falling on top
Sugar cereal with the prize inside
A perfect spread of peanut butter on toast
like the way they do it in the commercials
magically appearing from the knife

The unexpected attention of an adult
interested in what I was doing
A full set of colored pencils
with every color and a sharpener
a silver dome housing the shavings
Xanadu
a foam house of the future in the Dells

The smell of a new toy
plastic and fresh
A ventriloquist doll with the moving mouth
Kids that could skateboard
Kids that could dribble a basketball
Anyone that could do a flip

Tying shoelaces in a bow
Zipper pockets in sneakers
Ewoks and robots
Frogs, pigs and bears
Living together in harmony
Cable TV
HBO
Pay-per-view
Sega
A stack of CDs
rainbows on the one side

Pop up books
with a green octopus
The Three Stooges
The Imagination! pavilion at Epcot
and Figment the dragon
A sliver of independence
A floating pen
mini landscape inside
A gold marble
swirling universe inside

Stuffed animals
that could move
A carved bottle topper
with shifting eyes
An unexpected smile
(I didn’t realize that I was
the cause of the smile)
A polished rock
A foreign coin
A row of tin soldiers on the top shelf
killed in battle every time they came over

Quick wit
Careful thoughts
Slow, patient love

The greatest insult
