Dead Things

The dog found a dead baby bird

Had it fully in his mouth

Softly

Holding it like his own

I pulled it out

Bones and all

The dog found a turtle shell at the lake

Teeth touching shell

Proud

The raccoon got to it

After she laid her eggs in a hole by the house

Our dog

cute and cuddly

imagined that he hollowed out that shell

My dad threw it in the marsh

Puppy found it again

Swamp mud up to his belly

Dropped it at my feet

Spine attached to the top in the inside

Rorschach painting on the bottom

Gruesome and beautiful

The dog found a dead mouse in the backyard

Had it fully in his mouth

Softly

Holding it like a prize

I threw it over the fence

He found it again on a walk

Turned around and there it was

Fully in his mouth

Tail hanging out

Like a snake tongue

I threw it away

But he still looks there
