Tree Sweater

Somebody knit a sweater for the tree on the side of the road next to the bike parking lot on Pearl Street. It’s blue with pink and white flowers crocheted onto it. In purple lettering it says “You look lovely today.” The tree looks unhappy. Like it didn’t pick out this sweater. It’s mom did and now she has to wear it all day. All season really. It’s summer. Why is a tree wearing a hot blue blanket in summer? Can trees sweat? It looks uncomfortable. It’s young green branches stretching to the sky as if it’s ready for its mom to pull another layer over the sweater. The knitting is sagging a bit and dirty at the bottom towards the base of the tree. Is she telling people they look lovely today because she feels ugly? “You look lovely today but I feel like shit right now because I have a sweater on and its 90º outside.” I’ve decided to come back and cut the sweater off the tree in the middle of the night.
